for 2005 AYC Build-A-Boat Regatta
(Paddling)
printer friendly version

Rules: The regatta will be governed by these instructions.

Notices to Competitors: Notices to competitors will be posted on the official notice board. The official notice board is the bulletin board outside the clubhouse at the lower level entrance to the skipjack.

Changes to the Race Instructions: Any change to the Race Instructions will be posted 15 minutes before the race it will take effect. The Race Committee may elect to inform competitors of changes to the Race Instructions verbally via loud hailer prior to the heat in which the change will take effect.

Start: The Starting line will be between a staff supporting an orange flag on the end of the “L” dock, or on a boat moored at the “L” dock, and the downstream edge of a green cylinder “pin” in Spa Creek. Boats will be assigned to a heat by the judges.

Start Sequence: All boats will start from a stationary position behind the starting line. Boats will be permitted to paddle up until a warning is announced from the committee boat. The starting sequence will be as follows:

Starting Sequence
Time Before Start
Signal
2 minutes
2 long sounds
1 minute
1 long sound
30 seconds
3 short sounds
20 seconds
2 short sounds
10 seconds 1 short sound

5 – 0 seconds 5 short sounds at one second intervals and
1 long sound (or gun) at the start

A false start by any of the competitors will be signaled by sounding multiple short horn blasts after the start signal and result in that fleet being recalled and restarted using the same procedure. Two false starts by the same boat in a single race will result in disqualification from that race.

Course: The course will be a triangle with 2 extra legs. Each heat will be a 5-leg race. From the start, proceed to mark #1 (round to starboard), then to mark #2 (round to starboard), then to the starting line “pin” buoy (round to starboard.), then to mark #1 (round to starboard.), then back to the finish line. (See attached course diagram.).

Mark Rounding: Round all marks to starboard.

Finish: The finish line will be between a flag on the end of the “L” dock, or on a boat moored at the “L” dock, and a green cylinder “pin” mark in Spa Creek. This is the same as the starting line except it will be crossed in the opposite direction. The boat is finished when any part of the boat or crew in its normal racing position crosses the finish line (i.e., the crew may not extend a bow sprit or throw a paddle across the finish line to gain an advantage). Finished boats must clear the finish line and attempt not to interfere with boats still racing. Any boat not clearing the finish line in a timely manor may be penalized or disqualified by the race committee.

Gate: Pass through the gate (i.e., go between the 2 buoys), and then either round the port buoy leaving it or port, or the starboard buoy leaving it to starboard, and proceed to the next mark.

Safety:
1. All crew must wear a PFD.
2. Paddles may not be used as weapons.
