Rules of Engagement
The
Challenge is to design, build and race a small
boat using limited materials, a limited quantity
of fast curing Sikaflex® 291
Adhesive/Sealant and tenacious skill by team members.
Eighteen (18) teams will compete for trophies.
Teams, entered by sponsoring Syndicates, are certified
to compete upon receipt by AYC of a completed
entry form and fee. Funds collected are used for
materials, trophies and other expenses incurred
in conduct of this event. Any excess cash will
be donated to Junior Sailing activities.
Teams of no fewer than three and no more than
eight persons will be allotted up to five hours
to complete their boats using the following materials
to be supplied by AYC.
Four
(4) Sheets: 4' x 8' x 1/4" Luann Plywood
Three (3) Pieces: 2" x 2" x 8' Construction
Grade Fir
Four (4) Pieces: 1" x 2" x 10' Construction
Grade Fir
One (1): Caulk gun
200 plastic bundle ties (ties do not need to
be removed after construction)
Ten (10) Tubes: Sikaflex® 291 Adhesive/Sealant
For
Sailors only:
Materials for sailing syndicates are supplied
by Garth Hitchens as outlined in Appendix
A.
A plastic ground cover at least 15' x 20' is required
to be provided by the Syndicates.
Method of construction: Cut wood
to suit individual designs. Attach pieces together
using plastic ties looped through drilled holes
at regular intervals. Bond using Sikaflex®
291 Adhesive/Sealant. Decoration of the
finished boat is at the discretion of each team
usually following a theme that uniquely identifies
the Syndicate. Other than the use of water-based
paint, there are no other restrictions for finishing
and decorating the boats so long as there is no
contamination of the water in Spa Creek.
Only battery operated hand tools may be used.
All
team members will be on hand during the construction
phase.
Boats, paddles and sails must be made of materials
provided by AYC. (NO SUBSTITUTES). NO EXCEPTIONS.
Syndicates must register whether they will be
in the sailing or rowing category.
NO MOTORS ARE ALLOWED. Clandestine use of a motor
will disqualify the team and
banish the culprits to the dungeon for a period
determined by the Chief Judge.
Shoes and safety goggles will be worn during construction.
Use care in moving around boats in final stages
of construction. Only team members will be allowed
in the vicinity of boats.
No alcoholic beverages will be allowed in the
construction area during the five hours allotted
for building the boat.
Judges will stop unsafe practices AND VIOLATIONS
NOTED with appropriate visual
notations.
Type III personal floatation devices for each
occupant in the contesting boat will be carried
on board during the race. Inflatable vests qualify
if worn by the occupants.
VIOLATIONS OF RULES MAY RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION
FROM THE EVENT.
Specific Violations:
1.
Boat Overturns and crew gets wet
2. No PFDs on board
3. Syndicate Chase boats on the race course
4. Match Racing between two syndicates (cutting
off opponents)
5. Splashing opposing teams with paddles or
other instruments (hands?)
6. Unruly behavior by teams before starts and
after finishes
Syndicates must remove all boats from AYC property
by sunset on Sunday, June 25, 2006.
Syndicates must clean up work areas.
Safety is paramount. Use discretion and common
sense.
HAVE
GREAT FUN.
The
Race Committee will issue rules for the conduct
of the Races prior to the events.
